An American citizen of Bangladeshi descent has been detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka with 6 kg 800 g gold.

He was arrested around 8:40 am on Tuesday.

Sajjadul Islam, Assistant Revenue Officer, Customs House, said.

He said, “Detained US citizen Shahnaz Chowdhury came to Dhaka on Emirates Airlines flight EK562. During a search of the 8th Boarding Bridge, 59 gold bars weighing 6 kg 800 g were recovered from his body belt.

Customs officials said the detainee was interrogated and found to have brought the gold from the United States. However, as he was taking transit in Dubai on his way to Dhaka, further investigation is needed.

Customs officials said a case was pending against him.
