US launched airstrikes in Syria. The country’s military office, the Pentagon, said they carried out the retaliatory strike in response to a group close to Iran carrying out deadly drone strikes. Earlier, an Iranian drone strike killed a US contractor stationed in Syria and wounded five soldiers.
The Pentagon said both the Iranian drone strike and the subsequent US retaliatory airstrikes occurred on Thursday.
According to reports, a group close to Iran carried out a drone attack on a coalition base near Hasakah in northeastern Syria at 1:38 p.m. According to US intelligence, the drone used in the attack originated in Iran. The attack is expected to increase tensions between Washington and Tehran.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the attack was carried out on the orders of President Joe Biden against groups linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. “No one will get impunity after attacking our troops,” Austin said.
There is no confirmed information about the casualty in this incident yet.
US generals said that Iran-backed groups have attacked their troops stationed in the Middle East 78 times since the beginning of 2021. If they do not stop the attack, this ongoing aggression will continue.
