Turkish President to visit Saudi Arabia to restore ties
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is visiting Saudi Arabia to restore ties. The two countries hope that his visit will usher in a new era.
The Turkish president paid a courtesy call on Saudi King Salman in Jeddah on Thursday night (April 26). He also hinted at strengthening bridges with regional rivals. The visit was successful after several months of diplomatic efforts. On the same day, the Turkish president had a separate meeting with Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Erdogan is facing elections next year. Riyadh could help Turkey, which is under increasing inflationary pressures.
After the mysterious assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi embassy in Istanbul in 2016, bitterness between the two countries increased. The case has not been settled yet. Last Wednesday, Turkey released 26 people involved in the case.
