Today is World Health Day. The day has been celebrated through various programs around the world since 1950 to remember the founding day of the World Health Organization in 1948 with the aim of ensuring health rights for all as well as creating awareness.
In the light of the theme set by the World Health Organization, the day is celebrated in various events in Bangladesh as well as all over the world. This year’s theme of the day is ‘Safe World, Secure Health.’
Like every year, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Department of Health and non-governmental development organizations working on health have taken various programs to celebrate the day. These include – national level inauguration ceremony, organizing seminars besides release of souvenirs, health education exhibitions, publication of pamphlets in national newspapers, beautification of road islands, film screenings etc.
In addition, discussion programs on health issues have been organized by various organizations around the day.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Malek will inaugurate the National Level Inaugural Program today (April 7) to celebrate the day this year. The event, organized by the Ministry of Health and the Department of Health, will be held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital at 11 am.
Also, various programs of the World Health Day will be held at the local level under the supervision of all districts and upazila health departments of the country.
Note that in February 1946, the United Nations Economic and Social Council decided to convene an international health conference. In June and July of the same year, the International Health Conference was held and the Organizational Act of the World Health Organization was adopted.
Later, in 1948, the first World Health Conference of the World Health Organization proposed to celebrate World Health Day on April 7, and it became effective in 1950. That is, April 7 is designated as ‘World Health Day’.
