The Prime Minister gave houses to 32,904 families

The dream of another 32,904 homeless and landless families to get a house has become a reality as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today handed over the house to them at government expense. The total number of beneficiaries is 150,233.

Beneficiaries were provided tinshed semi-finished houses on two hundred acres of land under the third phase of Asrayan-II project as his gift before Eid-ul-Fitr.

The Prime Minister distributed documents and keys of the virtually newly constructed house.
He said, “We have given land and houses to 32,409 homeless and landless families under Asrayan-2 project.” I have given these lands and houses today as a gift for the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. ‘

The Prime Minister said her government has rehabilitated the landless and homeless in this phase as part of the Mujib Year program. He further said, “I like the smiles on the faces of those who have got houses.” Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman wanted to put a smile on the face of the people with the gift of a better and better life.

Sheikh Hasina said the Vedas, the third sex, tea-workers, lepers, differently abled and all disadvantaged people will be brought under the housing project to give the gift of a beautiful life.

The Prime Minister also exchanged views with the beneficiaries and other stakeholders through video conferencing from her official residence Ganobhaban in four places in four districts.

The four places are: Poradia Balia Shelter Project of Nagarkanda Upazila of Faridpur District, Khejurtala Shelter Project of Barguna Sadar Upazila of Barguna District, Khokshabari Shelter Project under Sirajganj Sadar Upazila of Sirajganj District and Hajigaon Shelter Project of Anwara Upazila of Chittagong District.

So far, 150,233 houses have been distributed in three phases under the Asrayan-II project as part of the government’s commitment to bring every landless and homeless person under housing in the country.

On January 23, 2021, 83,999 homeless and landless families received housing under the first phase and 53,330 families. On June 20 last year, in the second phase of the Asrayan-2 project, they got a roof over their heads.

Under the third phase of the Asrayan-2 project, the government plans to distribute another 65,64 houses to the landless and homeless across the country. Of this, the Prime Minister has already handed over 32,904 houses today. These houses have been constructed in 492 upazilas of the country.
According to the project details, 1,16,329 houses have been constructed so far in the first and second phase of the project and 1,63,003 houses have been allotted till the current financial year 2021-2022.

Under the project, land and houses are given ownership in the joint name of husband and wife of landless, homeless, impoverished and uprooted families.

Each unit has two rooms, a kitchen, a toilet and a veranda, valued at Rs 259,500 excluding tax and VAT. The amount including tax and VAT is 330,000 rupees.

In the third phase of Asrayan-2, the government has increased the cost and made changes in the design to make the houses more durable and climate tolerant.
The cost per house has been increased from Rs 1,91,000 to Rs 2,59,500 to make the houses more durable.

The government has built houses with strong Great-beam, lintel and RCC pillars to make the houses more durable.
Till the current financial year, 3 thousand 972 crore 8 lakh 5 thousand taka has been allocated for the construction of houses.

Apart from khas land, the government has bought 17.32 acres of land for the rehabilitation of homeless and landless people. 115.33 crore has already been allocated for the purchase of land.

The government has recovered 5,512.04 acres of khas land worth Tk 2,98.9 crore from illegal occupation across the country for the construction of project houses.

Under the Asylum Project, a total of 5,07,244 families have been rehabilitated from 1996 to March, 2022 and the rehabilitated families have been covered under the VGF program for three months.

Rehabilitation family members are provided with practical and technical training to engage them in various productive and income generating activities.

For their socio-economic development, micro-credit is disbursed from various government agencies such as Bangladesh Rural Development Board, Cooperatives, Department of Women and Children, Department of Social Services.

Free electricity connections have been provided to the rehabilitated families and tube wells have been installed at the project site for safe water.
Housing projects have been facilitated by community centers, prayer houses and cemeteries, ponds and roads for internal communication.

Senior Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office. Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Ihsanul Karim and Project Director of Asrayan-2 Project Abu Saleh Mohammad Ferdous Khan were present at the end of Ganabhaban.
