Qatar has assured that it will stand by Bangladesh to meet the growing energy demand. Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad gave this assurance in a meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC) on Sunday (March 5). Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen briefed the journalists after the meeting. Quoting the Emir of Qatar, he said, ‘The Emir of Qatar told Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, I want to help you. Qatar will always come forward to help Bangladesh.
“During the meeting, the prime minister sought more fuel from Qatar, specifically one million metric tons (MTA) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year,” Momen said. Quoting the Prime Minister, Momen said, ‘The Prime Minister said in the meeting, we want Qatar’s help. Bangladesh is facing energy crisis due to war in Ukraine. I want to renew the contract. I want more LNG. In response, the Emir of Qatar wants to know how much Bangladesh wants. He is told that Bangladesh wants another MTA ie 16-17 containers of fuel. Addressing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Amir said, “My energy minister will discuss this matter with you before you leave Qatar.”
Amir also said, I want to help you. Qatar will always help Bangladesh. Bangladesh currently imports about 40 containers of fuel, amounting to 1.8-2.5 MTA. The foreign minister said, “When Sheikh Hasina invited the emir of Qatar to visit Bangladesh, Sheikh Tamim said, I promise, I will visit Bangladesh this year.
The Prime Minister said that Bangladesh is establishing 100 economic zones and various countries are investing there. Qatar can also invest in those economic zones. Regarding the Bangladeshi workers in Qatar, Sheikh Hasina asked the Emir of Qatar to look after them, as some workers are losing their jobs here. In response, Sheikh Tamim said that he always wants the welfare of Bangladesh and Bengalis.
