School teacher Seema Akhter, 21, who was raped in Netrokona, has committed suicide.

He committed suicide by wrapping a scarf around his neck at his home in Tiyashree village of Tiyashree union of the upazila on Thursday night.

Seema Akhter used to teach at the local BRAC school. Police recovered his body and sent it to Netrokona Modern Sadar Hospital for autopsy on Friday.

Relatives claim that Seema committed suicide after the accused threatened to drop the rape case and spread pornographic videos on the net.

According to the family sources of the deceased, Seema Akhter met Rumel, 25, son of Menu Bhuiyan of Dhubawala village in Tiyashree union of the upazila 10 years ago at a marriage ceremony. From then on, a love affair developed between them.

Rummel raped the girl more than once in the temptation of marriage. On August 2, 2020, Rummel abducted her and raped her again.

In this incident, Seema Akhter went on a hunger strike at Rummel’s house on August 3 to demand marriage. Rummel fled the house as his family members did not accept the matter.

On August 8, 2020, the victim’s brother filed a rape case in the court. After completing the medical examination, the victim testified in court.

Despite mentioning the names of the three in the deposition, the police filed a chargesheet against Rummel.

The plaintiffs objected to the chargesheet on January 12, 2021 to get justice. The case is currently pending in the court.

Seema Akhter’s brother said, I go to the market of the municipal headquarters on Thursday for Eid shopping. The accused Rummel’s elder brother Russell Madan trades in cloth in the market of the municipal headquarters. Russell found us in the market and threatened to drop the case. Otherwise, the pornographic video of my sister recorded on the mobile phone of the accused will go viral on the net. Unable to bear all this, my sister committed suicide. I want justice.

In this regard, Russell said, I am busy with the shop during Eid. I don’t know if they came to the market yesterday. No threats were made to withdraw the case.

Madan Police Station OC Muhammad Ferdous Alam said the body was recovered and sent to Netrokona Modern Sadar Hospital for autopsy. If the family members of the deceased lodge a written complaint against someone then legal action will be taken subject to investigation.
