Saudi Arabia is sending a woman astronaut into space for the first time. The country’s government announced the sending of female astronaut Raynah Barnawi and male astronaut Ali Al-Qarni to the International Space Station. According to the Saudi Space Commission, the space flight is scheduled to launch from the United States to the International Space Station. In addition, two more astronauts in the Saudi Human Spaceflight Program, Maryam Ferdous and Ali Al-Ghamdi, are training for the mission.
Engineer Abdullah Al-Sawaha, chairman of the Saudi Space Commission, said the Saudi leadership is keen to provide unlimited support to the space program. Through this programme, the state intends to activate scientific innovations at the level of space science and increase its capacity to conduct its own research independently. which will reflect positively on the future of the industry and the country, increase the interest of graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields and develop human capital by attracting talent and required skills.
Human spaceflight symbolizes the excellence and global competitiveness of countries in many fields such as technology, engineering, research and innovation. This mission is also historic, as it will make Saudi Arabia one of the few countries in the world, according to the chairman of the Saudi Space Commission.
