The Saudi Arabian government is thinking of aceing the IPL, the world’s biggest franchise cricket tournament. They want to make a league, which will be the most expensive T20 tournament in the world.
According to Australian media ‘The Age’, planning for this league started a year ago. Because any proposed league has to be approved by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and approved by the member nations. ICC Chairman Greg Barclay has confirmed Saudi Arabia’s interest in investing in cricket.
He said, ‘If you look at the other sports that Saudi Arabia is involved in, I can imagine that cricket is something that would be more attractive to them. Usually in terms of their progress in sports. Cricket will do well for Saudi Arabia. They are very keen to invest in sports.’
The government of Saudi Arabia has discussed this with the owners of IPL. They are about to come up with a plan that could radically change the investment and perception of cricket.
The Gulf state is looking to host the richest T20 tournament in the world and this is their next project. In other words, they are focusing on cricket.
Currently the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not allow any of their players to play in foreign leagues. However, a proposal by representatives of the Saudi Arabian government is believed to relax that rule.
And if everything goes well, the Saudi Arabian league can surpass the IPL as well. Because it is difficult to reach the investors of Saudi Arabia due to the spread of money.
