Solaiman Hasan, from Narayanganj: The width of Dhaka-Chittagong highway has decreased due to parking of vehicles on the road. Traffic jams are being created. It has become a cause of more suffering in Eid Yatra. The vehicles involved in the accident are being kept on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway adjacent to Kanchpur Highway Police Station. This is causing misery to the people. The highway police are confiscating various vehicles damaged in road accidents and keeping them on the highways. Due to this long traffic jam is being created at the busiest Kanchpur bus stand of Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj. Suffering is on the way home for Eid. It is feared that in the next few days this misery may increase. However, the people concerned do not see any solution to this problem at present.
Talking to concerned persons, it is learned that Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, Dhaka-Sylhet Highway and Madanpur-Bhulta-Gazipur (Dhaka Bypass) road are under Kanchpur Highway Police. The vehicles plying on these roads, which were damaged in the accident, have been confiscated and kept near the boundary wall of the Highway Police Station adjacent to Kanchpur bus stand for about two months. This has reduced the width of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the area. Traffic jams are being created. It has become a cause of more suffering in Eid Yatra.
Kanchpur Union Parishad chairman Mosharraf Omar said the main task of the highway police was to keep the highways free of traffic jams. Due to the fact that Kanchpur bus stand is within the industrial area, this stand is overflowing with people day and night. Due to the parking of vehicles on the highway by the highway police and various illegal installations on the highway, people are suffering in traffic jams every day.
It was seen on the spot at Kanchpur bus stand on Thursday afternoon that the highway police had occupied various places of the highway and kept various damaged vehicles. The hawkers have occupied the highway on both sides of the main gate of the police station and there are various vehicles damaged on it. We have to wait a long time to cross the road in front of the police station and bus stand.
Ali Hossain, the driver of a pickup van that left from Banasree in Dhaka, said that every day when they come to Kanchpur bus stand, they get stuck in traffic for one to one and half hours. This misery is mainly due to the parking of vehicles on the highway police highway. Kawsar Ali, a driver of a Chittagong-bound bus, said that the traffic jam has increased for the past few days. There is more suffering due to parking of highway police vehicles in front of the police station. Ali Amjad, cashier of Shyamoli Paribahan counter, has called for keeping the roads free from traffic congestion at least on the occasion of Eid.
In this regard, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kanchpur Highway Police Nabir Hossain said that they were forced to park their vehicles on the highway as there was no designated place to park the damaged vehicles. The problem will be solved if there is a place for parking of highway police vehicles.
