Russia has again carried out large-scale airstrikes in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev.
The Russian military launched a new attack on Tuesday morning. Ukraine’s air defense system is ready to intercept the Russian attack, officials said.
This is the 17th Russian airstrike in Kiev this month. Reuters reported this information in a report on Tuesday.
Russia launched a new “massive” attack on Kiev early Tuesday morning, and Ukrainian air defenses are ready to repel the attack, city officials said. Meanwhile, air raid sirens have sounded in several other regions of Ukraine.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said on the messaging app Telegram, ‘There is a massive attack! No one should leave the safe haven.’
Officials in Kiev’s military administration said air defense systems were repelling the attack. However, debris from Russian missiles or drones hit several areas of the capital, including the historic Podil and Pechersky neighborhoods.
Mayor Klitschko said a 27-year-old woman was taken to hospital after being injured in the southwestern Holosivskiy area.
Klitschko also said residents of a high-rise apartment building in Kiev were being evacuated early Tuesday after debris caught fire after the Russian attack. Klitschko said that according to preliminary information, one person was injured.
Officials of the military administration in Kiev posted a photo on their Telegram channel, showing a fire burning on the top floor of a multi-story apartment building. The city’s state administration said in a telegram that windows and doors of several apartments were broken.
Reuters, however, was not able to independently verify these reports.
The attack, which occurred early Tuesday, was Russia’s 17th in Kiev this month, Reuters said. In addition, for the third day in a row, Moscow attacked Kiev with the same intensity in the dark of night. Earlier on Monday, Russia attacked the capital city of Ukraine twice.
In Monday’s attack, Russia used Iranian-made Shahed drones and cruise missiles, the military administration of the city of Kiev said. Serhiy Popko, the head of the city’s military administration, said in a telegram that by continuing these attacks, the enemy wants to keep the civilian population in deep emotional tension.
Earlier, Russia attacked Kiev in the dark of Sunday night. The attack is believed to be Russia’s largest drone strike in Kiev since the start of the war. One person was killed and several others were injured in the massive attack. In addition, the Ukrainian authorities also claimed that 36 drones were shot down on Kiev on the same day.
Russia has recently stepped up its offensive against Kiev. In recent attacks, Russia has been using so-called kamikaze drones as well as cruise and ballistic missiles.
Analysts say the Russian military is seeking to destroy and damage Ukraine’s air defenses ahead of Kiev’s long-awaited counterattack.
However, Ukraine has been planning a counter-attack for the past few months. But Ukraine is taking as much time as possible to train troops and receive military equipment from Western allies before launching that offensive.
