The clashes erupted on Friday morning over an Israeli police operation in al-Aqsa during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Aqsa Mosque or Baitul Muqaddas is the third holiest place for Muslims around the world. And to the Jews it is known as Temple Mount. They also consider it as one of their holy places.

Israeli police say a group of protesters hurled stones at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. Police entered to disperse them. 300 people were detained. But Palestinian sources say more than 400 Palestinians have been detained.

Witnesses say members of the Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets at Palestinian protesters. Protesters also hurled stones at Israeli forces.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said most of the injured had been taken to hospital. Al-Aqsa was shot in the eye by a security guard with a rubber bullet. Israeli forces prevented ambulances and paramedics from entering the mosque’s compound. This caused problems in rescuing the injured people.

They attacked mosque workers, ordinary people, young people and even the elderly. Throw rubber bullets. Beaten up. Many were injured. Police did not even release the doctors.

An Al Jazeera reporter from the scene also said that Israeli police had attacked the mosque compound without any excuse.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health says two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike early Thursday. Three more Palestinians were killed earlier in the day.

AFP and Reuters say clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians broke out on the grounds of the Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan last year. The Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and Hamas, the controller of Gaza, have been fighting Israeli forces for 11 days over the incident. Israel and Jordan intensified talks before the start of Ramadan this year in an effort to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents.

The Israeli government has claimed that 14 people have been killed in four attacks in Israel since March 22. At the same time, 21 Palestinians were killed. Israel’s security forces have stepped up operations in the West Bank following the attack.
