Belgian Foreign Minister Sophie Williams has announced that she will step down from her post to stay with her husband, who is suffering from brain cancer. He made the announcement on Thursday, local time. News from BBC and The Guardian.
Sophie Williams, 46, is Belgium’s deputy prime minister, along with the foreign minister. He served as Belgium’s prime minister for a year before becoming foreign minister in October 2020.
Announcing her resignation, Sophie Williams said she needed to be by the side of her husband, Christopher Stone, who was suffering from brain cancer. Besides, she has to be by their side to take care of her three children.
In a Twitter post, Sophie Williams said: In our lives, to be precise, this disease has entered my husband’s life. Many men and women, even my husband as a child are struggling with this disease.
Sophie Williams added that the minister needs to be fully committed to his duties. But it is difficult to help Christopher and his three children in this difficult time. He also said that he has been on unpaid leave since the announcement.
Sofia’s husband, Christopher Stone, 63, is an Australian businessman and former footballer. He played for Melbourne from 1981-1981.
