Fugitive Aarav Khan sentenced to 10 years in prison

The court sentenced Rabiul Islam alias Arav Khan to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case filed under the Arms Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal and Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Murshid Ahmed announced this verdict on Tuesday.

Apart from the life sentence, Aarav Khan was fined 10,000 rupees. If he fails to pay the fine, he will have to serve another three months imprisonment. Aarav Khan is absconding in this case. The verdict said that the sentence will be executed after his arrest or surrender.

According to the judgment, the prosecution has been able to prove beyond doubt the charge of possession of illegal weapons against the accused. Government Counsel Hafizur Rahman Tota confirmed the matter. After hearing the arguments of the state last Sunday, the tribunal fixed the date of judgment on Tuesday.

Earlier, on March 28, the hearing of the case was declared over. At that time, the state party told the court that 10 out of 20 witnesses had testified in this case. The rest of the witnesses need not testify. Later, the court declared the hearing to be over.

According to the complaint of the case, on January 28, 2015, Rabiul Islam scared his father-in-law Sekendar Ali and went to his house in Moghbazar to collect money. He was arrested in front of his father-in-law’s house with a loaded revolver.

Sujan Kumar Kundu, then sub-inspector of car theft prevention and rescue team of DB West, filed a case against Rabiul under Arms Act at Ramna Model Police Station. On March 1, 2015, the investigating officer of the case, DB Deputy Inspector Sheikh Hasan Muhammad Mustafa Sarwar filed the charge sheet against the accused Rabiul Islam Apon.

On May 10 of the same year, the court ordered the trial to begin by framing charges against Rabiul. He got bail in this case on March 14, 2018. After that, the court issued an arrest warrant against him on October 24, 2018, as he was absconding on bail.

Rabiul Islam is also accused in the murder case of Police Inspector Mamun in Banani of the capital. Apart from this, there are several criminal cases against him in different police stations. After getting bail in these cases, he absconded and changed his name to Arav Khan.
