Former finance minister and Awami League advisory council member Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has died (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilahi Raziun). He was 6 years old at the time of his death.
He died at the United Hospital in the capital at 12:56 pm on Friday.
This information has been informed from the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep grief over the death of Muhith.
Last year, 6-year-old Muhith was attacked by Corona. On July 29 of that year, he was admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka. There he returned home free of taxes. The economist has been physically weak since then. Muhith fell ill again in March this year.
Abul Maal Abdul Muhith was born in 1934 in an aristocratic Muslim family in Sylhet. Muhith was the second son of the then Sylhet District Muslim League leader Abu Ahmed Abdul Hafeez. His mother Syed Shah Banu Chowdhury was also active in politics.
After completing his Masters in English Literature from Dhaka University in 1955, Muhith studied at Oxford and Harvard. After joining the Pakistan Civil Service in 1956, he held various important positions in the government of what was then Pakistan and later independent Bangladesh.
When the Awami League came to power in 2009, he became the finance minister. When the Awami League came to power for the second consecutive term in 2014, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed the responsibility of the finance ministry on her shoulders. Muhith, a member of the Awami League’s advisory council, has a record of announcing Bangladesh’s budget 11 times and nine times in a row.
