French President Emmanuel Macron has sought the help of Chinese President Xi Jinping to stop Russia’s war in Ukraine. News BBC.
“I can count on you to bring Russia to its senses and bring everyone back to the negotiating table,” he told the Chinese president.
Xi said that both countries have the ability and responsibility to protect world peace.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin says there is still no chance of a peaceful settlement. The attack will continue.
The French President is currently on a visit to China. China’s relations with the West have been deteriorating for the past few years. China has refused to condemn Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
Macron, however, also wants to strengthen economic ties with China. He traveled to the country with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen to participate in talks with the Chinese leadership.
On Thursday afternoon, Macron visited a military parade in Beijing. Soon after, he attended a closed-door meeting with Xi Jinping. Chinese and French officials, however, described the meeting as open and friendly.
Speaking to reporters later, Xi said China supports peace talks and wants a political solution. At the same time, China is calling for rational restraint from the international community.
Xi Jinping reiterated that nuclear weapons should not be used in conflict. Russia said earlier this week it would deploy nuclear weapons near the NATO ally’s western border in Belarus.
Macron said Europe will not be safe and stable as long as Ukraine is under someone’s control. It is unacceptable that a country on the UN Security Council is violating the organization’s own charter.
The French president spoke in a cordial and sometimes warm voice. He did not ask any questions. Slowly left to discuss with von der Leyen.
At the beginning of this visit, Macron told reporters that Beijing could play an important role in ending the Ukraine-Russia war.
A few days ago, China proposed 12 points to bring peace to Ukraine. The Chinese President visited Russia recently.
