Although there is an e-gate at the immigration of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, the passengers are not getting its benefits. They have to wait in line for hours. As a result, many are expressing anger. E-Gate was launched at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka for the first time on June 30, 2021 with much anticipation. But currently it is seen that e-gate is closed most of the time. And if it is open, then you have to pass the e-gate and go to the immigration desk as usual.
There are total 26 e-gates at the airport. There are 12 e-gates for arrivals, 12 for departures and two e-gates for VIP. Those who have e-passports are supposed to complete immigration quickly using these gates, but the passengers complain that e-gates do not have any benefits in reality.
However, authorities and immigration officials say all e-gates are operational. Even two to three thousand passengers with e-passports are using these gates every day. Regarding gate closure, they said, the e-gate is open all the time except when the e-gate is closed for some time due to technical reasons.
In this regard, the Executive Director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Kamrul Islam, told the media that an average of 15 percent of the number of passengers who travel to the airport every day are e-passport holders. And many passengers are still afraid to use e-gate. But after a few days when there will be no more machine readable passports, then everyone will use e-gate, the director also said.
